SQL Server MVPs Aaron Bertrand and Kevin Kline continue their series on query tuning best practices. They discuss how to build a Transact-SQL test harness to provide stability and predictability to your code. They also remind you about some things that are common red flags and rules of thumb when tuning your queries in order to increase your query performance. Aaron then goes over some more patterns and anti-patterns and tells you some details about specific things that he sees go wrong very frequently, when helping others go over code and how to fix it. These patterns and anti-patterns include queries that are optimized for SELECT statements but not for DML statements, using functions in WHERE and JOIN clauses, and queries with wildcard searches.
